Wedding Traditions

  • By Religion

There are around 20 major religions in the world today, with hundreds of other religions that exist within small populations. Every religion celebrates their beliefs through rituals and traditions that are carried on throughout each progressing century, many changing to meet the demands of our ever-changing world, while others remain steadfast, holding the same rituals as the day they were founded. Oftentimes each religion has its own set of practices within the marriage ceremony and can be used by the bride and groom to celebrate their heritage and background, adding to the emotional, as well as spiritual aspects of the wedding day. • By Country or Continent

Due to the influence of mass media and the internet, many traditions have carried over from country to country, including the prominent white wedding dress. Religions have also spread all over the world, and are not longer limited to their country of origin, blending with the other cultures they come in contact with. However, many traditions remain firm, and can be seen celebrated in their unique ways in their originating countries. The Crowning Ceremony is still a very popular tradition within the Greek Orthodox religion, as is the Handfasting Celebration within the Celtic religions. Find Out More
  • By Denomination

Many larger religious groups are broken into smaller sects or denominations. This can be seen with the many denominations of the Christian Church, including Catholicism, Protestantism, and Mormonism. Although these groups maintain a similar set of morals and beliefs, the way they choose to celebrate their faith may differ, thus creating unique traditions and rituals within each sect. Oftentimes, even the basic traditions are the same, but may be influenced by geological factors or other cultural characteristics. Find Out More
